As a jewelry designer and artist, its pretty extraordinary how many times someone has said, “and (insert gemstone of choice) is my birthstome!” Of course in the moment, as Im closing the sale, Am I going to be the one that says, “you know that whole birthstone thing is a farce, right?”
Of course not. But when you look at the history of the advent of birthstones, (Which we now know as designated gemstone(s) for each calendar year) you see that these assignments are completely arbitrary, created by companies like Tiffany and Co.
So, being a person who really prefers to be authentic, I feel myself to be in a bit of a moral dilemma in how to engage with my clients around this topic. Especially as what I do is really about personal power adornment. Albeit for ME to tell them that there’s no Easter Bunny!
I get that it also helps people choose the “perfect” personal birthday gift for someone when its jewelry. But try this on on for size:
- Imagine what colors would look especially magnificent on them. Does it go well with their eye color, skin color, and wardrobe palate?
- Does the piece have any symbols or story associated with it that would be meaningful to them?
- Can you imagine any specific qualities (such as protection, confidence, or sensuality) that the piece might elicit in the wearer? This is good stuff. Let them know when you gift them with it. The words you associate the gift with is your prayer for the person receiving this gift. And prayer works…because each time they put that necklace on they know its a talisman of magic.
