Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely adore my little sister Tiffany. She’s 11 years younger than me, but has always amazed and impressed me with her intelligence, sensitivity, artistic abilities and nowadays her professional prowess and what a wonderful mommy she has become. She’s both cute as a button while being stunningly beautiful, tall and voluptuous.
Her fashion tastes have always been toward the slightly conservative, and I have never seen her wear any jewelry other than dainty and understated. So, last October when she and her family were in the U.S. visiting, I was nearly flabbergasted when she announced that she wanted to commission a necklace for herself! I’m not sure how long she had been thinking about it. And, ironically, I had just gifted her a lovely labradorite and blue topaz pendant that I thought would be petite enough for her tastes.
She explained she needed a “statement piece” for company parties and dinners. She didn’t have anything that fit that description, and I think she wanting something gorgeous and powerful with a presence and elegance to wear with evening attire.
I was very honored to be asked to make something special for her. And, I felt the anxiety of an artist who wants to make her masterpiece, for it to be perfectly her, and something that she totally treasured. I must have pondered on that piece for at least a couple of months. We had a FaceTime call to decide between a fe possible stone combinations.
She loved the white topaz and ruby combination. Later I added a rutile quartz that accented the design beautifully. Next I created a scratch drawing of the first idea. I had a back up plan for something more modernistic if she didn’t love it. But she did love it…yay!
It was a silhouette style piece created from hand-sawn sterling silver elements that were textured with a hammered effect. So cool. It blossomed in the creation process and I am very pleased with how it turned out. I can’t wait t see it on her when I visit in a couple of months!
